Firstly, I say Indian view because this concept exists in India at least before few thousand B.C.
This post about my view about the Indian culture on this topic.
India has many languages, 25 officially provinces languages, but more unofficial and spoken only languages are present.
Same as language there are as many cultures and even more Gods!
But with all these diversities and difference all of them conclude to use 7 days a week. And each day is associated with a God or Planet.
Sunday-Sun
Monday - moon
Tuesday - Mars - God Karthikeya
Wednesday - Mercury - God Budhan
Thursday - Jupiter - God Guru
Friday - Venus - Guru Sukracharya
Saturday - Saturn - God Shaniswaran
Indian's worship nine planets, referred as Navagrahas (nava - 9, Graha- planet). Seven are assigned to the weekdays, which also help in astrology and calculating auspicious occasion and days.
The rest 2 planets are shadow planets associated with eclipse that also impact our life events - at least not letting you out in the outdoor or look at sky - scientifically for the atheists
Now, what am talking deviating away from my Title of this post???
Well... Coming to the point, The key is to know how these Navagrahas are placed for worship!
These nine planets are placed in a 3x3 matrix form ; with Sun in the centre, flanking with Mars and Jupiter; Moon, Venus & Mercury standing in the front row before the above three planets; Saturn, flanked by Raghu and Kethu stands on the last row behind Sun.
That is... The planets revolve around the Sun.
So planets revolving around the Sun is not discovered in recent century, but had been believed and worshipped many centuries ago in India.
Then why there is a belief/custom that Sun revolves around the Mother Earth?
Perspective...
Let me tell a store from Hinduism, The Religion of India for many centuries and even today...
Lord Siva is one of the three main Gods (others: Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma). Lord Siva is a hermit amongst these Gods, interestingly he has a family too, unlike others! His eldest son is Lord Ganesha, youngest son is Lord Murugan.
Once they were made to compete to own a divine mango fruit. The competition is about going around the world three times. Lord Murugan is a born warrior and have peacock as his wagon. Lord Ganesha is stdiuos and stout with pot belly, moreover his wagon is mouse!
Once the competition is announced Lord Murugan mounted the peacock and started going the world. Lord Ganesha is still standing in the same place and was thinking aloud. After sometime Lord Ganesha went around his parents thrice and announced himself to be victorious and claimed the fruit.
Everyone including his parents, Lord Shiva and Lordess Shakthi, were stunned at the actions of Lord Ganesha. They asked for an explanation considering Lord Ganesha won't make statements without thought and reason. Lord Ganesha replied, the competition is about going around the world, and My world is my parents, and I went around them thrice promptly.
Lord Ganesha's declaration stirred some conversation and thought but Ganesha was concluded victorious unanimously to claim the divine Mango fruit.
The expert of this competition is 'My World' is around me and not the physical world, care and be cared by My World.
In My view, hence, the sun revolved around My world, Moon revolves around My world and the planets too goes around My world.
This is My Perspective, agree or disagree heed and give your perspective.
